Visit the brand new Carrick Smuggling History: Contraband – Cargoes from the Isle of Man Exhibition at Girvan Library during the month of October. Until 1765, the Isle of Man was a storehouse of contraband. Based on a Manx merchant’s correspondence this exhibition describes the cargoes of wine and spirits sent to customers in Carrick.

As part of this exhibition, don’t miss our talk with renowned author Frances Wilkins as she discusses the history of the smuggled cargoes of wine and spirits sent to customers in Carrick from the Isle of Man.

The cabinet contains objects such as a taxidermied bird, a wooden sculpture of a strange, open-mouthed creature, an old-fashioned deep-sea diving helmet, a painting of a sailing ship, and a small model ship. A single hanging lamp with a warm glow illuminates the scene. The overall tone is mysterious and vintage, evoking a sense of historical discovery.
