Carrick’s Smuggling History: Contraband – Cargoes from the Isle of Man Exhibition

Visit the brand new Carrick Smuggling History: Contraband – Cargoes from the Isle of Man Exhibition at Girvan Library during the month of October. Until 1765, the Isle of Man was a storehouse of contraband. Based on a Manx merchant’s correspondence this exhibition describes the cargoes of wine and spirits sent to customers in Carrick.

As part of this exhibition, don’t miss our talk with renowned author Frances Wilkins as she discusses the history of the smuggled cargoes of wine and spirits sent to customers in Carrick from the Isle of Man.

An illustration of Tiny Tam, a cute cartoon mouse, on a sandy beach with the ocean and a sailboat in the background. Tiny Tam is wearing yellow sunglasses, a blue-striped beanie with a pompom, and orange shorts. He has a pink flamingo-shaped inflatable ring around his body. To the left, a colourful beach ball rests on the sand. Behind him, a large postcard with a red and blue border reads "Wish you were here!" in a playful font, with a stamp in the top right corner that features a tiny mouse illustration. Carrick's Smuggling History

Ayr
An oil painting of a seascape, depicting a turbulent ocean with crashing waves in shades of blue, white, and deep green. The thick, textured brushstrokes give a sense of movement and energy to the water. In the background, a misty landmass or rocky formation emerges from the sea, partially obscured by the atmospheric haze. The sky is overcast with a mix of light gray and white tones, blending seamlessly into the distant horizon. The painting has an impressionistic style, emphasizing the raw power and beauty of the ocean.
