A Godlike Manner: The Accused Witches of South Ayrshire

A Godlike Manner: The Accused Witches of South Ayrshire

In association with the charity Remembering the Accused Witches of Scotland, Carnegie Library is proud to present an exhibition exploring the history of the accused witches of Scotland, focusing on the accused witches of South Ayrshire specifically. This well-researched trip back in time highlights such figures as Agnes Campbell, Patrick Lowrie, and Rev William Adair. This exhibition also delves into the historical accuracy of local legends Cutty Sark and Maggie Osbourne and provides a timeline of how the “Witch Panics” developed in Scotland. A must for all history buffs!

This is a free, drop-in exhibition during library opening hours. All are welcome, but please be aware that some descriptions of historical tortures may be upsetting for the young or sensitive.

An illustration of Tiny Tam, a cute cartoon mouse, on a sandy beach with the ocean and a sailboat in the background. Tiny Tam is wearing yellow sunglasses, a blue-striped beanie with a pompom, and orange shorts. He has a pink flamingo-shaped inflatable ring around his body. To the left, a colourful beach ball rests on the sand. Behind him, a large postcard with a red and blue border reads "Wish you were here!" in a playful font, with a stamp in the top right corner that features a tiny mouse illustration. Carrick's Smuggling History

Ayr
An oil painting of a seascape, depicting a turbulent ocean with crashing waves in shades of blue, white, and deep green. The thick, textured brushstrokes give a sense of movement and energy to the water. In the background, a misty landmass or rocky formation emerges from the sea, partially obscured by the atmospheric haze. The sky is overcast with a mix of light gray and white tones, blending seamlessly into the distant horizon. The painting has an impressionistic style, emphasizing the raw power and beauty of the ocean.
