Tunes in the Tunnel

Tunes in the Tunnel

The Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra will be playing traditional Scottish music ‘Tunes in the Tunnel’ event in the Alloway Railway Tunnel to raise funds for their forthcoming Iberia tour this July and to support the tunnel mural project.

Stop by and listen as you enjoy viewing the latest editions to our mural. It’s going to be another beautiful sunny day so why not make this part of a day out to Alloway.

About the Alloway Railway Tunnel Mural

Alloway is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ayrshire. It’s the birthplace of Robert Burns, and the village itself is set among picture postcard historic buildings, parks and is close to the stunning Ayrshire coastline. However, it did have one big, ugly, scary, unloved area… the old railway tunnel!

We have transformed this dilapidated tunnel with a beautiful mural, which we hope will be the biggest in Scotland. It’s not just a tunnel; now it’s an exciting space with colour, drama, personality and soul. It’s loved by the community who helped to transform it. We’ve given it a new lease of life and more than restoring the past we have given it a future.

Our artist Chris Rutterford is the passion behind the painting. He has executed the mural beautifully. The mural has been a real labour of love. When you visit the mural, you will be captured by the joy and the energy of the place, it really is magical and uplifting.

Where is Alloway Railway Tunnel?

We are opposite The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, Murdoch’s Lone, Alloway, Ayr, KA7 4NH

Cross the road from the museum, turn left and walk along the pavement until you come to a path going down a ramp to the cycle path. Turn left and the tunnel is 100m ahead of you.

There is parking nearby and a fantastic coffee shop/restaurant in the museum. Toilets are available. There is also a superb playpark at the museum.

An illustration of Tiny Tam, a cute cartoon mouse, on a sandy beach with the ocean and a sailboat in the background. Tiny Tam is wearing yellow sunglasses, a blue-striped beanie with a pompom, and orange shorts. He has a pink flamingo-shaped inflatable ring around his body. To the left, a colourful beach ball rests on the sand. Behind him, a large postcard with a red and blue border reads "Wish you were here!" in a playful font, with a stamp in the top right corner that features a tiny mouse illustration. The scene has a bright and cheerful summer vibe.
