Barrhill

Barrhill is located between Girvan and Newton Stewart, and is surrounded by farmland. The village has a store and a pub, ‘The Trout Inn’, which serves food daily. The Cross Water, a tributary of the River Stinchar, flows through the village.

Just outside Barrhill, you can see Black Clauchrie House, a manor house and former hunting lodge. The house’s architecture and decoration are a fine example of the Arts and Crafts movement. Nearby, you’ll find Kildonan House, also built in the early 20^th century.

In 1665, John Murchie and Daniel Mieklewrick were found with Bibles at the side of The Cross Water at Barrhill. They were assumed to be Covenanters and shot and buried on the spot. A memorial, ‘The Martyr’s Tomb’, now marks the place. There’s a scenic walk to the site, from the bridge in the village, along the banks of The Cross Water.
