The Wolves Always Come at Night (2024)

Director: Gabrielle Brady
Country: Mongolia
Year: 2024
Genre: Documentary
Running Time: 1hr 35mins

Born into generations of nomadic herders in Mongolia’s vast Gobi Desert, Davaa and Zaya are raising their four children in close harmony with the land, their animals and long-held traditions. Their lives are profoundly shaped by the rhythms of nature until a devastating sandstorm wipes out their entire flock of sheep, forcing the family to leave behind the rural existence they cherish and begin an uncertain new life in the city.

Blending documentary and fiction in a strikingly original way, The Wolves Always Come at Night offers an intimate portrait of a family navigating loss, displacement and the far-reaching effects of environmental change. Co-created with Davaa and Zaya, who helped shape the telling of their own story, the film combines breathtaking imagery of the Mongolian landscape with a deeply personal account of resilience and adaptation.

Both a moving family story and a reflection on the challenges facing traditional ways of life, Gabrielle Brady’s acclaimed film is a powerful exploration of home, identity and the human cost of a changing climate.
