Ayr Celebrates International Nelson Mandela Day

Join Ayr’s celebration of International Nelson Mandela Day! Music, freedom songs, film clips, and South African recipes and food will be on offer at Café Elephant in Holy Trinity Church Hall (behind the Gaiety Theatre).

Nelson Mandela became a symbol of the South African struggle against apartheid and the oppressive regime that enforced it. After spending 27 years as a political prisoner, he went on to become South Africa’s first Black president. During his presidency, apartheid was dismantled through reconciliation efforts, a national peace accord, and the building of a multiracial democracy.

Around the world, Nelson Mandela Day is an opportunity to reflect on his values and principles and to take action to make a positive difference in our own communities.
