Ailsa Craig and Beyond – Talk by Dr M Barry Miller

The story of the Scottish Lighthouse Service

Dr Barry Miller will join us at The McKechnie Institute for a fascinating talk ‘Ailsa Craig and Beyond’ covering the development and evolution of the Northern Lighthouse Board, with a particular emphasis on lighthouse related technological innovations that have taken place over the 250 years from its inception to the present day.

Ailsa Craig lighthouse, established as a gas powered station in 1880s occupies a unique place in that story.

After a career in Science Research and Education Dr Miller joined the Northern Lighthouse Board as the Retained Light Keeper for Ayrshire and Galloway just over 20 years ago. Originally from Garlieston and now Kirkcolm, Barry is almost certainly the only person who currently has Ailsa Craig listed on his employment contract as a workplace.

Heston Island, Little Ross, Mull of Galloway, Crammag Head, Corsewall and Loch Ryan are the operational lighthouses situated in Galloway while Ailsa Craig, Turnberry and Lady Island are the lighthouses on the Ayrshire coast.
