May is National Walking Month, so there’s no better time to get your boots (or sturdy shoes!) on, and enjoy the great outdoors. South Carrick has so many scenic routes to explore around Girvan, Dailly and the Stinchar Valley, including Barr and Ballantrae, some of which are coach-led by our Active Communities team.
Girvan Trails range from just over 2 to 11 miles, taking you through fields, farms, prehistoric sites and rural history. The Barr Trails feature five different routes, joining together for 20 miles of beautiful countryside, forest, riversides and open hills. The four main Dailly Trails all start at the village square, but soon lead to marvellous woodland frequented by wildlife and even waterfalls. In March, South Ayrshire’s Health Walks with trained leaders include Dailly’s Dalquharran Estate and the Devil’s Trail in Barr.
Other trails to try include the short but steep Knockdolian Hill (1.2 miles) with its superb panorama from Arran to Northern Ireland and the adventurous River Stinchar Walk (2.5 miles) at Ballantrae – see Gillian’s Walks for both of these and more inspiration.
The 100 mile Ayrshire Coastal Path also starts in South Carrick at Glenapp, with sections including Glenapp – Ballantrae – Lendalfoot – Girvan, covering 23 miles.
