Loans has a long and proud history. Look around and you’ll see lots of reminders of the past. A small settlement called Lons is shown on Blaeu’s Atlas of Scotland, dated 1654. This map also shows Clolellan and Kraiksland, both still part of our wider community.
Loans village has changed and expanded significantly in the last 30 or so years, particularly since construction of the A78 by-pass. Many new houses have been built and new residents have come from further afield. Loans has a close relationship with Troon and Dundonald, butstill holds on to a distinct identity.
Just recently, a lifting stone was excavated from the main street. The “Old Loans Stone” is a 112kg Historic Lifting Stone which used to sit outside the Blacksmith’s. It was historically used as a test of strength for the young men of the village. Having been partially buried in the pavement over the past century, in 2025 it was excavated is currently in the process ofbeing relocated to the village hall to preserve the lost culture of stone lifting in Loans.
In 2026, Loans Village Hall will celebrate its centenary and remains the hub of what’s going on in the village and a vital facility for our local community.
The Village Hall can be hired by any individual or group on a regular or one-off basis . There is a main hall with stage, a smaller meeting space, with modern kitchen and toilets, including accessible facilities. The size of the main hall is approx 80 square metres and can accommodate up to 70 people, depending on use.
Popular bookings include dance, yoga classes and the like. There are also regular social gatherings and special events. The hall can be hired for private functions, such as parties and weddings. Commercial lets are also available for training or conferences, by arrangement.
