Autumn Walks

South Ayrshire takes on a whole new glow in the autumn, with vibrant colours and rich autumnal landscapes. It’s the perfect time to lose yourself among the trees as you wander woodland paths, climb through the countryside or take an invigorating walk along the coast. We’ve teamed up with Gillian’s Walks to bring you some ideas to explore South Ayrshire in all its autumn glory.

Maidens & Culzean Coastal Circuit

This circular walk starts at the quaint Maidens harbour, taking you along the sandy beach to a boardwalk and steps up to Culzean Castle & Country Park. Arriving at the Swan Pond, the route passes through the woods to the castle and spectacular clifftop views. With hidden corners like Happy Valley, this route offer plenty of little discoveries.

Dalquharran Trails, Dailly

Situated beside the village of Dailly, the 261 acre Dalquharran Estate offers an extensive and marked path network to explore. Starting at the war memorial on Main Street, this walk takes you past both Old and ‘new’ Dalquharran Castles, set amongst ancient woodlands and rich pastureland. Look out for the wildlife, curved feature bench and telescopes!

Brockle Wood from Annbank

This short circular route around beautiful Brockle Wood is especially recommended in autumn. With easy access from Annbank, the pretty stream gives way to the River Ayr. Taking just under an hour, Brockle Wood offers a prefect pre-lunch stroll, though it’s definitely one for boots or wellies!

Knockdolian Hill, Ballantrae

Known as “Ailsa Craig’s Twin”, the summit of the distinctive Knockdolian Hill offers incredible panoramic views over to Northern Ireland and the Kintyre Peninsula on a clear day – but be warned, it’s very steep at places! Starting at Trae Bakes, Craigiemains Garden Centre in Ballantrae, this circular walk blends history, scenery, and adventure.

Old Auchans Trail, Dundonald

Starting at Dundonald Castle Visitor Centre, this route follows Dundonald Burn, before a delightful woodland trail continues uphill to the impressive remains of 16^th century mansion, Old Auchans House. Further along, an almost vertical climb is rewarded with magnificent views to Arran, though if you don’t fancy this, you can retrace your steps home after reaching the house!

River Ayr Woodland Walk, Ayr

Autumn is the perfect time for this short woodland walk along the banks of the River Ayr, which is buggy, child and dog friendly! Beginning at Holmston Rd, close to the University of the West of Scotland Ayr campus, stroll along the footpath to the A77 where you can cross the bridge using the roadside pavement to follow the river back along the opposite bank.
