Acclaimed writer-director Sophy Romvari makes a remarkable feature debut with this deeply personal and evocative autobiographical drama. Set between the 1990s and the present day, the film follows young Hungarian immigrant Sasha as her family settles on Vancouver Island in search of a new beginning. As they adapt to their unfamiliar surroundings, family life is increasingly overshadowed by the erratic and dangerous behaviour of Sasha’s older brother.

Told through a series of fragmented memories, Blue Heron captures the elusive and unreliable nature of childhood recollection, weaving together moments of tenderness, uncertainty and upheaval. The story later shifts to the present, where Sasha, now a filmmaker, revisits these formative experiences in an attempt to understand the lasting impact of family trauma and the ways memory shapes identity.

Poignant, beautifully observed and emotionally resonant, Blue Heron is an intimate exploration of migration, family bonds and the enduring search for meaning in the stories we carry with us.
