This creative workshop will introduce you to the traditional resist techniques of Japanese indigo dyed Shibori, such as:
Ne-maki Shibori – tie-dye using small objects and binding
Nui Shibori – stitched patterns and motifs
Tesuji Shibori – pleated & bound fabric
Itajime Shibori – folded, bound and clamped with board/sticks
Your tutor will demonstrate these methods and you’ll be encouraged to mix and match different techniques to produce a range of your own textile dye samplers on natural fabrics such as linen, cotton and silk.
Shibori is messy and lots of fun! It’s not a precise art and some techniques are quite unpredictable, so it’s always exciting to see what emerges when the dye is washed out as there’s no such thing as a mistake – just happy accidents!
This workshop will enable you to gain the skills and confidence to try out some of these techniques at home, using commercially available dyes and common household items to refresh your wardrobe.
NB: All materials and equipment will be supplied to create your textile samplers.
Please note that we will be using an indigo blue dye, so you are advised to wear old/dark clothes in case of any spills/splashes!
Your samplers will not be dry when the workshop finishes, so please bring a waterproof bag to take them home in.
This venue is fully wheelchair accessible.
