Photogram Printmaking Workshop

This fun and experimental session introduces participants to the creation of photograms and the practice of working in a darkroom. A photogram is a cameraless photographic process in which objects are placed directly onto photographic paper and exposed to light, creating abstract compositions through the interplay of light and shadow.

Popularised during the 1920s by Dada artist and photographer Man Ray, as well as Constructivist artist El Lissitzky, the photogram emerged as a creative challenge to traditional photography. This striking graphic process embraces chance and mystery, making it a unique and expressive form of printmaking.

The session is led by photographer and educator Mike Stone (@_rodinal on Instagram). Designed as an accessible introduction to darkroom practice, it will familiarise participants with the darkroom environment, including safe lighting procedures and processing equipment. You will also receive guidance on chemical preparation and be taken through the photogram process step by step.

All materials are included. A selection of objects will be available to use, but participants are encouraged to bring along their own favourite items, whether simple, meaningful or symbolic. Natural objects such as leaves and feathers, as well as glass objects, work particularly well. Please note that the photographic paper measures 10 x 8 inches, so keep this in mind when choosing the size of any objects you wish to bring.

The workshop is suitable for all levels of experience, from complete beginners to those with some photography or darkroom knowledge.

Plan for the Session

The evening will begin with a brief history of the photogram, followed by an introduction to the darkroom and black-and-white photographic chemistry. There will then be a demonstration of photogram creation and processing before a short coffee break. Participants will spend the remainder of the session creating their own photograms, with opportunities for questions and discussion, concluding with a showcase of the images produced during the workshop.
