Join Philip Paris for A Fire in Their Hearts, exploring Scotland’s forgotten civil war.
A Fire in Their Hearts was inspired by the extraordinary story of the 17th-century Scottish Covenanters, who were involved for decades in a brutal conflict with successive monarchs over control of the Church of Scotland. Philip’s talk will shine a light on this largely forgotten yet hugely important period in Scotland’s past, when captured Covenanters were often banished and sent as forced indentured servants to plantations in America or the West Indies — many never to be seen again.
Highland-based author Philip Paris is the bestselling writer of The Last Witch of Scotland, Waterstones Scottish Book of the Year 2024. His work spans a wide range of themes, from Men Cry Alone, an award-winning novel about domestic abuse against men, to Casting Off, a comic story set in a Highland care home. His debut novel, The Italian Chapel (2009), tells the story of the creation of Orkney’s famous building, constructed by Italian prisoners of war during the Second World War. His non-fiction book Orkney’s Italian Chapel: The True Story of an Icon is recognised as the leading authoritative work on the subject.
