Monkton

About Monkton

Monkton is a small village just 1.5 miles north of Prestwick, bordering on the perimeter of Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

A tower-like building on the hill beside Monkton was originally a windmill, and later a dovecot. On the other side of the Prestwick Airport runway, another structure, the Shaw Monument, was used to house hunting falcons.

Monkton Old Church is a historic old building, where the story goes that William Wallace fell asleep while weary from battle, but awoke with a new resolve to fight on against the English.

Near the village, you’ll see the MacRae monument or ‘Orangefield Family Burial Ground’. It was built in 1750 for the MacRae family from Orangefield House, once known as Monkton House.
