Perfect picnic spots for Father’s Day fun

This Father’s Day (21 June), why not celebrate the simple way with a picnic in the park. We’ve rounded up five of the best spots in South Ayrshire for quality time with the ones you love. So pack some tasty treats, look out the bats and balls, and make special memories to last all summer long.

Best for a dramatic setting -
Kennedy Park, Dunure

With its stunning location next to Dunure Castle, Kennedy Park has everything you need for a full-on family day out. Offering incredible sea views over to Arran and Ailsa Craig, there’s a play area, sports court with basketball hoops and goals, football pitch, skateboard ramp, picnic tables, built in barbecue areas, toilet facilities (charges apply) and nearby labyrinth.

Best for hide and seek -
Belleisle Park, Ayr

Beautiful Belleisle Estate is much loved by local and visiting families, with its deer park, children’s play park, conservatory and woodland walks. The walled garden is a delight to behold with stunning floral displays, central sundial and pond, while the trees and huge ornamental hedges make it perfect for hide and seek.

Best for fairytale charm - Fullarton Woods, Troon

The ancient Fullarton Woods have it all – woodland charm, open space, sheltered spots and a little bit of magic thanks to the famous Fairy Trail. As well as the fairies and elves, look out for woodcarvings and wildlife too. And with picnic tables, a play area and all important toilets, it’s a perfect place to spend the day.

Best for running wild and rounders - Prestwick Beach Park

With its fabulous seafront setting, Prestwick Beach Park has all the ingredients for a lively afternoon! Get stuck in first to the sandwiches while the kids let off steam on the zipslide, battering ram, swings, slides and climbing equipment. Build some sandcastles on the beach then head back up to the vast grassy area where there’s loads of room for rounders, frisbees and a good old fashioned game of tig!

Best for stories in the sunshine -
Orchard Gardens, Girvan

Prefer a peaceful afternoon with stories in the sunshine? Head to Girvan’s beautiful Orchard Gardens. Protected by old walls, the Gardens offer the perfect suntrap, with fruit trees, flower trellises and fish pond with water lilies. Throw your blanket down, get out the books or sketch pads and enjoy this genuine hidden gem.
