The true story of Agnes MacLehose, a devout woman who enters a passionate, unconsummated love affair through letters with Robert Burns.
Join Catriona Wilson, Creative and Research Director, author, and Patron of the National Trust for Scotland, for whom she acted as Creative Advisor for The Burns Project (Edinburgh Fringe 2025), as she delivers her talk on Agnes MacLehose, a devout, gifted woman, trapped in an abusive marriage, who enters a passionate, unconsummated love affair through letters with Robert Burns – only to have him “steal” [in his own words] her lines, her heart and her reputation, in a story that offers fresh insights into Burns while restoring Agnes as a clear, powerful voice that resonates today.
Combining rigorous research with natural storytelling, Catriona challenges established narratives and connects past and present in ways that resound with the thoughtful, culturally curious audience. This fresh interpretation of Agnes MacLehose restores her reputation, gives voice to less well‑evidenced women, and deepens our understanding of Burns.
While attendance at this event is free on charge, we highly recommend booking a ticket to secure your space.
