Fullarton Woods

Fullarton Woods is precious area of mature native woodland. A network of paths, the main routes with good accessibility, allow pleasant walks through the woods and the opportunity to view the rich diversity of flora & wildlife. The parkland area adjacent to the car park has plenty of space for activities.  Toilet facilities and a children’s playpark are nearby. The Championship Garden, in a woodland clearing, has picnic tables and woodcarvings. Brass-rubbing posts featuring aspects of the local wildlife can be found throughout the site.

The history of Fullarton Woods goes back to medieval times and remnants can still be seen. The gateposts of Fullarton House (former home of the Duke of Portland & demolished in 1966) mark the entrance to the car park. The remains of a more ancient structure, Crosbie House, nestle in the woodlands. Also of interest nearby is Crosbie Kirk and cemetery.

The Smuggler’s Trail runs through Fullarton Woods, making it an ideal stopping-off point for walkers.

Friends of Fullarton Woods

Friends of Fullarton is a small charity, founded in 2015, concerned with the restoration and care of the ancient woodlands of Troon.

The charity works closely with South Ayrshire council (the landowners), South Ayrshire Ranger Service, Scottish Wildlife Trust Ayrshire, Nectar Network and other associated groups who use and care for the woodlands. Their main aims are ongoing maintenance tasks, protecting & increasing biodiversity, campaigning on issues such as flooding and care of the historic structures and facilities for visitors to the Woods. As a Registered Charity, they also raise funds and access available grants to purchase trees, tools etc.

Together with the Ranger Service and Wildlife Trust, the charity regularly involves schools and community groups in guided nature walks, history walks and other woodland activities.

Volunteer sessions are held on the last Sunday of the month, 10am -12 noon. The aim is to provide a variety of tasks suitable for most abilities, such as;  removal of invasive plant species, propagation, planting & maintenance of native trees, upkeep of allotment & raised beds, path maintenance and work on nesting boxes. Please visit the Get Involved page on their website for more information.
