The village of Minishant is 3.5 miles north of Maybole, close to the River Doon.
Nearby is Auchendrane House, once the site of Auchendrane Castle and home to the ill-fated Mures of Rowallen, who fell foul of the powerful Kennedys. Their fate was recorded in Sir Walter Scott’s poem, ‘Auchindrane or The Ayrshire Tragedy’.
Minishant also has strong links to William Wallace, and ‘Wallace’s Stone’ sits near Blairston Mains Farm. The stone has a long, sword-like cross engraved on it, and legend tells that it was Wallace’s sword that left the impression.
The 3.5ft long stone was originally found near Wallace’s Cave in nearby Long Glen, but was brought to a more visible location. The cave is said to be the place where the Scots hero hid after the ‘Barns of Ayr’ incident in 1297.
